Issue 04/2008 - The Bed - Haven of Well-Being - Sleeping deeply relaxed means pure wellness and recreation

Did you know that human health mainly depends on the quality of our sleep? We really feel completely well only after having well reposed. Our body needs sufficient sleep to recover from daily stresses and strains. Many people, however, can only dream of a relaxing sleep. You should choose carefully your mattresses, pillows and blankets. High-quality bedding basics prevent sleep disturbances, backache and tensions.

The perfect pillow works wonders

If you wake up in the morning with headache or neck pain, this can be due to your pillow. To ensure a quiet sleep it is important to choose a pillow not too big or too small, too thick or too thin, too hard or too soft. If the position of your head is too low the front neck muscles will be stretched. If your head is bedded too high the back neck muscles will be stretched. Both positions will lead to tensions. If your pillow is too big your cervical spine cannot really be relieved. In fact, half cushions of the size 40 x 80 cm provide for an anatomically correct position of head and neck. They can be mainly recommended for back or side sleepers. Special neck rest cushions are particularly suitable for relieving the neck muscles.

Unlike adults, babies don’t need cushions due to the fact that their little heads in proportion to their bodies are still very big. For toddlers flat pillows are recommended as a first light supportive cushion for their heads and necks.

Mattresses should be individually adapted

The decisive factor for an optimal relaxation of the back muscles is the correct lying position during the night. Therefore the mattress should be carefully chosen according to the individual requirements of your body. If the mattress is too soft or too hard, due to the bad posture involved you may suffer from muscle tensions up to vertebra shifts.

A restless sleep can also be caused by a mattress of a very high hardness degree. In order to avoid the increased pressure we always turn over while we are asleep. On the other hand the mattress should support some degree of mobility, i.e. it should not be too soft and not too flexible. Slight movements asleep are even necessary to rejuvenate the spinal discs.

If you cover yourself up properly, you will sleep well

The heavier the better? This is not true! For judging the quality and the thermal properties of the blanket its filling weight is not relevant. A high-quality filling must be fluffy, elastic and resistant to deformation. When buying a blanket special attention should be paid to the thermal grading points. Most of the blankets available in trade are adapted to the different seasons.

Which material should you choose? Whether synthetics, wool, natural animal hair or downs – you will find a wide range and each material has its specific advantages. Rely on your personal feeling. The blanket should feel soft and cosy when you touch it. Make also sure that the cover is breathing-active and of a sufficient size. Children up to the age of 6 need a blanket of 100 x 135 cm. For older children the normal size of 135 x 200 cm is recommended. The blanket should be measured from your chin to your feet and should be 20 cm longer than this measurement.

As to the expected useful life of bedding items the following applies: Pillows should be changed after 2 to 3 years, blankets with normal-level strain after 7 to 8 years and with higher-level strain after 5 to 7 years. As a rule, mattresses can be used during 8 to 10 years.
